Patrice Evra has stunningly told Ruben Amorim who should be Manchester United captain as pressure on Bruno Fernandes grows.

Fernandes was given the armband by Erik ten Hag in 2023 after the former manager stripped the under-fire Harry Maguire of his duties.

While the attacking midfielder is considered one of United’s best players and recently extended his contract until 2027, his leadership skills have come under heavy criticism.

Graeme Souness recently said the 30-year-old had become a liability after receiving his third red card of the season in the Boxing Day defeat at Wolves.

With the Red Devils enduring one of the lowest points in their history, Amorim has openly admitted that his team are ‘starving for leaders on the pitch’.

The United head coach made the comments on Friday whilst talking about the surprise decision to extend Maguire’s contract with the club, describing the England defender as ‘a leader.’

‘We need him a lot and also he has to improve as a leader, because we all know the situation that he had here but we need him a lot in this moment so we are going to trigger happily the option for Harry.’

And despite having the captaincy unceremoniously stripped off him, United legend Evra believes Maguire deserves another chance to skipper the side.

Replying to an Instagram post that shared the news of Maguire’s contract extension, the former full-back wrote: ‘Give him the armband back!!!!

‘After all he been through showing resilience and leadership.’

Maguire was expected to leave Old Trafford after being shunned by Ten Hag but while he came close to a transfer to West Ham he ended up staying put and has become a useful member of the squad.

The 31-year-old did captain United again in the Carabao Cup win over Barnsley in September but it has been Lisandro Martinez who has worn the armband in the games where Fernandes has been suspended.

The Portugal international is set to be captain again on Sunday when United travel to Anfield to face arch-rivals and league leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.

Few are expecting the Red Devils to get anything from the game having lost five of their last six league fixtures, results that have left the side 14th in the table.
