Manchester United relegation odds after Ruben Amorim’s side slump to Newcastle defeat

Manchester United’s wretched run of results continued on Tuesday night as Ruben Amorim’s men were consigned to a fourth straight defeat in all competitions by Newcastle.

A pair of headed goals from Alexander Isak and Joelinton put Newcastle 2-0 in front after only 20 minutes and the Red Devils simply had no answer, with the loss leaving the club stuck down in 14th in the Premier League.

There is now just seven points separating United from the dreaded relegation zone, with United fans increasingly forced to divert their gaze from the top towards the bottom of the table.

Amorim was even quizzed about the prospect of United being dragged into a relegation battle at his post-match press conference, which the Portuguese himself admitted was a ‘little bit embarrassing’.

‘That is really clear and we have to fight,’ the United boss replied when asked whether United were fighting to keep hold of their Premier League status this season.

‘It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty and to be clear with that, we have to fight next game.’

Asked if it was humiliating to be asked about the possibility of United being relegated, Amorim responded: ‘Yeah. It’s also my fault in this moment.

‘I think the team is not improved. It’s a little bit lost in this moment. It’s a little bit embarrassing to be Manchester United coach and lose a lot of games but we have to cope with difficult moments in life. It’s a hard moment.’

Amorim will desperate to stop the rot when United return to action in the new year – but it doesn’t get any easier for the former Sporting head coach.

A trip to top-of-the-table Liverpool awaits United next on Sunday, followed by a heavyweight FA Cup third-round clash with Arsenal at the Emirates a week later.

Odds on Manchester United suffering relegation in the Premier League this season

Incredibly, BetVictor have United at 14/1 to drop down into the Championship, with the current bottom three – Southampton (1/33), Leicester (2/7) and Ipswich (8/15) – seen as the favourites to be relegated.

Wolves (5/2), Everton (3/1) and even Manchester City (9/1) are all fancied to suffer relegation over United this season according to the online bookmaker.

Bet365, Sky Bet, 888 Sport, Unibet, Betfred and BoyleSports are significantly kinder when it comes to United’s chances of securing survival in the English top flight, offering odds of 33/1.

Elsewhere, Paddy Power and Betfair have placed United at 40/1 to go down.

Ladbrokes and William Hill, meanwhile, have odds of 28/1 on the Red Devils sinking into England’s second tier.

In the wake of United’s ninth loss in just 19 games at the hands of Newcastle, club legend Gary Neville encouraged Amorim to consider recalls for Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho.

Looking ahead to United’s trip to Anfield, the former England right-back said on his Sky Sports podcast: ‘I have no idea how they approach this game on Sunday.

‘Manchester United have gone there many times in the last few years and it’s been tough, very tough.

‘You’re just wondering what can Ruben Amorim do in these next few days…obviously the only thing he can do is point towards Manchester City.

‘Obviously players will come back, maybe, and things will improve, maybe. I’m not going to harp on about Garnacho and Rashford because if they’ve not been showing the attitude in training then don’t bring them back in.

‘But they are better than what we’re seeing out there on the pitch.

‘They’ve got legs. If Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold are thinking about lining up against [Joshua] Zirkzee and Bruno [Fernandes] or [Christian] Eriksen in those pockets, they probably wouldn’t want to play against Garnacho and Rashford.

‘That’s the reality of it. Who do they not want to play against?

‘That will be difficult for Amorim because he wants to set a new culture, standard and expectation in the dressing room of what’s right and he’s not liked some of the things that he’s seen in the last month or so. But we’re back at needs must, it’s desperate at this moment in time.

‘Manchester United are only seven points off relegation. It’s a really tough moment, this.’
