Former England manager Gareth Southgate has received a knighhood in the New Year Honours list while Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson has received an MBE.
Southgate, 54, resigned as England boss two days after his Three Lions team were beaten by Spain in the Euro 2024 final last summer.
During eight years in charge of the national team, Southgate led England to 61 victories from 102 games.
Southgate also oversaw England’s run to the Euro 2020 final, where the Three Lions suffered a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Italy at Wembley.
The former Premier League defender was the only manager bar 1966 World Cup winner Sir Alf Ramsey to take England into a major final.
Under Southgate, England also reached the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 and quarter-finals in 2022, though there is a sense even that is an underachievement for a team that boasts some of the best players in the world.
Sir Gareth, who earned 57 caps for England between 1995 and 2004, was knighted for services to association football.
Following his resignation, the Prince of Wales – who is president of the FA – thanked Southgate for ‘being an all-round class act’ as England manager.
‘Thank you for showing humility, compassion, and true leadership under the most intense pressure and scrutiny,’ he said.
‘And thank you for being an all-round class act. You should be incredibly proud of what you’ve achieved.’
New Years Honours have also gone to a number of Team GB athletes, including superstar runner Hodgkinson, who was named the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2024.
Hodgkinson, 22, claimed gold in the 800 metres at the Paris Olympics while also defending her European title and setting a new British record of one minute 54.61 seconds which made her the sixth fastest woman in history.
Mountain Biker Tom Pidcock, 25, is made an OBE after winning gold in Paris as part of a Team GB squad that won 65 medals at the 2024 Olympics.
Team ParalympicsGB won 124 medals at the subsequent Paris Games, finishing second in the final medals table.
Other honoured gold-medallists include Hannah Cockfroft (CBE), Duncan Scott (OBE), Ellie Aldridge (MBE) and rowers Lola Anderson, Hannah SCott, Lauren Henry and Georgie Brayshaw (all MBE).
Former F1 driver and broadcaster Martin Brundle is made an OBE and Liverpool football legend Alan Hansen – who suffered a serious illness earlier this year – has been made an MBE.
Outside of the world of sport, actor Stephen Fry was among the star-studded list of celebrities recognised.
The Blackadder star was recognised for his services to mental health awareness, the environment, and to charity, having been president of Mind since 2011.
