Ruben Amorim has singled out Manchester United defender Harry Maguire for praise, insisting he’s a player who always has ‘no excuses’.

Maguire played 90 minutes as United lost 2-0 to Wolves on Boxing Day, with the Red Devils back in action on Monday against Newcastle United.

The 31-year-old England international centre-back has started United’s last three Premier League games and is becoming a key player under Amorim.

The United head coach was asked for his general thoughts on Maguire in a press conference on Friday after his ‘rough couple of years’ at Old Trafford.

Amorim said: ‘He (Harry) works really well, he is focused on the job and not what people say. He has no excuses, even if he had some tough moments.

‘I think in that department he is an example. He is there to play, to help the team and he’s trying to do that.’

Maguire lost the United captaincy under former manager Erik ten Hag, who was replaced by Amorim in November.

Amorim has endured a tough start to life as United head coach, winning just two of his opening seven Premier League games in charge.

With his successor lasting just six weeks at Sporting Lisbon, Amorim knows that his job is already in ‘danger’ heading into the Newcastle game.

‘The manager of Manchester United can never, no matter what, be comfortable,’ Amorim added.

‘I know the business that I am in. I know that if we do not win – regardless if they paid the buyout or not – I know that every manager is in danger and I like that, because that is our job.

‘So I understand the question. You can say that I have been here a month and I have had four training [sessions], but we are not winning.

‘So I have that; that is a reality, and I am quite comfortable with that.’
