Salihu Lukman, a former National Vice Chairman (Northwest) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has called on former President Olusegun Obasanjo to rally past Nigerian leaders in forming a new political party capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general election.
Lukman made the appeal in an open letter to Obasanjo, responding to a recent statement attributed to the former president, in which he remarked that “a leader made by Satan is bound to fail, while God’s chosen one will thrive.”
In his letter, Lukman urged Obasanjo, alongside other former leaders, to unite the opposition to foster political change in Nigeria. He specifically named former Presidents Muhammadu Buhari, Goodluck Jonathan, and Generals Yakubu Gowon, Ibrahim Babangida, and Abdulsalami Abubakar as having a moral obligation to address the nation’s leadership crisis.
“Everything must be done to put Nigeria on the roadmap of producing Godly leaders,” Lukman wrote. “Leaders such as Your Excellency, together with Gen. Gowon, Gen. Babangida, Gen. Abdulsalami, former President Jonathan, and former President Buhari, have the huge moral obligation of engaging all opposition political leaders in the country to unite in order to produce a functional political party that can serve as the harbinger for the emergence of Godly leaders in the country.”

Lukman criticized the fragmented state of Nigeria’s political opposition, warning that disunity among opposition parties could hand the APC another victory in 2027.
“It is not enough to lament about the fact of Satanic leadership in the country,” he stated. “So long as Your Excellency and other past leaders fail to assert their moral authority in ways that can lead to the emergence of Godly leaders, it is as good as working for the second term of President Tinubu and his team of failed leaders at all levels.”
He added that unless a united platform is created, Nigeria’s political system will continue to churn out “cloned” versions of the APC and PDP, driven by impunity and self-serving interests.
“With such a makeup, acts of impunity will continue to drive politics, and even if we produce new parties with different names, such parties will at best be PDP and APC cloned,” he argued.
Lukman highlighted the risks posed by some opposition leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal ambitions over collective goals.
“There are risk factors that, if left on their own, can pollute the process and take us back to square one,” he warned. “Already, some opposition leaders are resisting efforts to form a united political platform largely because of their subsidiary ambitions to contest elections.”
He also accused some leaders of using regional and ethnic narratives to advance personal agendas, alleging that these tactics could result in “another assembly of Satanic leaders for Nigeria in 2027.”
Reflecting on his time within the APC, Lukman claimed the party capitalized on divisions within the opposition during the 2023 elections and is likely to use the same strategy for 2027.
“I can say authoritatively that the current mindset of President Tinubu and APC is to keep the opposition divided as the basis for winning the 2027 elections,” he declared.
He warned that opposition leaders refusing to unite are inadvertently aiding the APC’s re-election efforts. “Any political leader in disagreement with the current sad reality…who refuses to work with other opposition leaders is inadvertently working for the electoral victory of APC and President Tinubu in 2027.”
Lukman urged Obasanjo and other former leaders to step in and address these challenges. He emphasized the urgency of creating a functional political platform to drive Nigeria toward “Godly leadership.”
“Your Excellency, this is the crux of this open letter. I believe that within the shortest time possible, the process of producing a functional political party, which can be the harbinger for the emergence of leaders with a Godly genotype, is possible,” he concluded.
Lukman’s call serves as a rallying cry for Nigeria’s opposition to set aside their differences and challenge the status quo in the country’s political landscape.
