Manchester City have made an approach to sign former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba on a free transfer, according to reports.

The 31-year-old left Juventus last month and is set to return to football in March after his four-year ban for doping was reduced to 18 months following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

City, meanwhile, have been hit by several injuries this season and have particularly felt the loss of Rodri in central midfield.

According to The Independent, City have ‘sounded out’ a potential move for Pogba, with Pep Guardiola a keen admirer of the French World Cup winner.

However, the report adds that Pogba would be ‘reluctant’ to join City, gives his previous ties with United.

In 2018, Guardiola revealed that City were offered the chance to sign Pogba from United.

Pogba, who joined United for a then world record £89 million fee in 2016, remained at Old Trafford until he left to join Juventus on a free transfer in 2022.

In recent weeks, Pogba has been linked with moves to Marseille, the Saudi Pro League and Major League Soccer side Inter Miami.

Speaking last month, Marseille and France midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, urged Pogba to join him in Ligue 1.

‘I would advise him to come to Marseille, yes,’ Rabiot said.

‘Paul is a talented player. If he regains all his physical abilities and is also good in his head, he remains a top player.’

On Friday night, Pogba indicated that he is closing in on a return to football with a post on Instagram which included emojis of an hourglass and a zipped-face.
