The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, Prof Edoba Omoregie, has decried the low enrollment rate of students of the institution into the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, scheme.
Prof Omoregie raised the concerns during a meeting with the officials of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND in Abuja.
DAILY POST reports that a statement from the Public Relations Office of the school, made available to newsmen in Benin City said the Vice Chancellor was in the NELFUND office to discuss the prospect of getting more Uniben students enrolled into the scheme.
Responding to the request, the Executive Director, Operations at NELFUND, Mustapha Iyal, attributed inadequate sensitisation and doubt about the authenticity of the fund as primary reasons for the low enrolment.
Iyal, who, alongside other officials, received the Vice Chancellor, expressed readiness for the scheme to include as many students of the University as possible only if they apply and meet the guidelines.
He, however, congratulated the Vice-Chancellor on his well-deserved appointment.
DAILY POST reported that as of August 16, 2024, a total of 332 students of the university have benefitted from the scheme.
The benefitting students received N24.4 million from the scheme.
It also reported that as of November 23, 2024, NELFUND had disbursed N11,047,793,949.80 billion to 105,764 beneficiaries across 98 federal and state tertiary institutions.
