The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has inducted the first set of nursing graduates from Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos, into the nursing profession.

The 16 nurses graduated from the Department of Nursing Sciences of the private university.

The NMCN Registrar, Alhassan Ndagi, during the induction ceremony called on the newly inducted nursing graduates to adhere strictly to the profession’s ethics.

The registrar, represented by Assistant Director of Nursing, Chioma Chigbo, challenged the newly inducted nursing graduates to revolutionise healthcare delivery in Nigeria, emphasising that they have a critical role to play in transforming the country’s healthcare system.

While congratulating the graduating students on their successful completion of the Bachelor of Nursing Science programme, the registrar stressed that the nursing profession was not just a job, but a calling that required dedication, hard work, and a strong commitment to providing high-quality patient care.

Ndagi noted that the graduates had been equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to make a positive impact in the healthcare sector.

He urged the graduates to be agents of change in the healthcare system, adding that they have a critical role to play in improving healthcare outcomes in Nigeria.

He advised them to be innovative, creative, and proactive in their approach to patient care, and to always strive for excellence in their practice.

The registrar emphasised the importance of adhering to the ethics of the profession, displaying humility and honesty, and continuously updating their knowledge and skills to provide high-quality patient care.

The NMCN also encouraged the graduates to be open to learning from their colleagues, receive guidance from them, accept corrections, and improve and adjust positively where necessary.

“As graduate nurses, you must be able to perform nursing skills in a variety of healthcare settings, therapeutically assisting individuals, families, and communities with diverse backgrounds, such as religion, culture, social status, and belief, among others, to resolve healthcare challenges.

“To achieve this, you need to understand the psychosocial and physical factors involved in the alleviation of suffering, promotion of health, and restoration of health, and be able to function independently and collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. During your practice in any healthcare setting, you should be able to develop and initiate strategies for health promotion, as well, as implement and evaluate such strategies for necessary outcomes.

“However, the truth remains that you will be constrained in performing all these roles immediately after you start practising as a nurse. Therefore, I encourage you to be open to learning from your colleagues already working in the clinical areas, receive guidance from them, accept corrections, improve and adjust positively where necessary, and avoid unnecessary mistakes,” he advised.

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Professor Clement Kolawole, charged the graduating students to make a positive impact in the world through their nursing profession.

The don emphasised that nursing is a profession of purpose and impact, and encouraged the graduates to strive for excellence, uphold the values of the nursing profession, and remain committed to providing quality healthcare services to their patients.

The VC also encouraged the graduates to strive for excellence, uphold the values of the nursing profession, and remain committed to providing quality healthcare services to their patients.

He added, “Dear inductees, as you begin your nursing career, I urge you to remember that nursing is a profession of purpose and impact and this must be evident in your career. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of your patients, their families, and the communities you serve.
