Ian Wright is adamant Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes will be ‘unbelievable’ under new Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim.
Fernandes has been one of United’s most consistent players since his £67m move from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, scoring 56 goals and making 44 assists in 171 Premier League appearances.
The 30-year-old has been slightly less effective this season but still has four goals and five assists for a team sitting in the bottom-half of the Premier League.
Fernandes did, however, go 13 games without a goal at the start of the season and appeared to be one of the players struggling under former manager Erik ten Hag.
The Portugal international has admitted he is excited to work under Amorim, who took over Sporting Lisbon in 2020 a few months after Fernandes left the club to join United.
Manchester United drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town in Amorim’s first game in charge and Wright saw enough in the game to believe Fernandes will go to another level under the new boss.
‘Can I say something in respects to Bruno Fernandes,’ Wright said on Premier League Productions. ‘He’s going to be even better.
‘He’s going to be unbelievable, even seeing it in flashes [against Ipswich], he was picking up the ball and he had options.
‘I’m telling you, once he [Amorim] gets the right players in, we’re going to see something.’
Fernandes faced the press alongside Amorim on Wednesday afternoon ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League clash against Bodo-Glimt.
The Portuguese playmaker said he was confident of fitting in to Amorim’s new system at Old Trafford.
‘You always have to adapt to different ideas and positions, even sometimes playing in the same system you have to adapt to different ideas of playing,’ he said.
‘It is not difficult for me to adapt in any position. I am really well aware of that.
‘During training I try to absorb everything, from every position. I try to have an understanding of the game because being the captain, the manager cannot always give the message from the bench to the pitch.
‘As captain, you have to try to resolve the situation together with your team-mates. Having knowledge of every position is my role.
‘I think [adapting to the system] could probably be worse for the younger players – I know what the Sporting players were doing very well.
‘Not because I was reading what the manager was doing, but because I was watching their games!
‘We are international players. Every time you go to the national team, you probably play in a different system.
‘With Portugal, we sometimes play with a back three. I’ve had that experience of the manager’s formation already.’
