A former member of the House of Representatives, Bade Falade, has expressed concern over the increasing trend of former governors becoming lawmakers, arguing that many of them ultimately become liabilities to the National Assembly and their constituents.
Falade, who represented Ede, Ejigbo, and Egbedore Federal Constituency of Osun State in the House, expressed concern that the National Assembly is slowly transforming into a dumping ground for politicians who have completed their governorship tenures.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists in Osogbo during an event titled ‘The Frontliners’, organized by the League of Veteran Journalists, Osun State, on Thursday.
Falade stated that members of the National Assembly can only achieve meaningful legislative turnover that positively affects citizens’ lives if the constant rotation of legislators, disguised as political zoning, is limited.
He emphasized that legislative roles require years of experience to make substantial contributions in the esteemed chamber.
The former lawmaker criticized certain state governors who perceive the National Assembly as a retirement refuge after their tenure, noting that many of them become liabilities due to their lack of lawmaking experience.
Additionally, Falade encouraged Nigerians to shift their focus from the monthly salaries and luxury vehicles of lawmakers to recognizing the significance of their oversight responsibilities, particularly in preventing financial leakages.
