Manchester United legend Roy Keane has picked out two ‘huge problems’ that incoming Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim must solve.
It is a huge job for the 39-year-old, with the Red Devils down in 13th in the Premier League table ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.
Keane feels the first issue Amorim must improve is the work ethic in the side, which he feels is seriously lacking in some players.
‘There’s a few players in the United team in big positions who can’t run, which is a big problem,’ Keane said on Sky Sports. ‘But they also have players in the team who don’t want to run and when they do run they don’t run hard enough, fast enough, for long enough so he has to get that into the dressing room, that mentality. The players who aren’t doing it you have to try and move them on.
‘This team doesn’t run, that’s a big problem. They’ve got really talented players but if you’re not going to run you’ll get nowhere fast.’
He added: ‘This group of players don’t dig in, when the going gets tough they go under, they go under too easily.’
Keane also pointed out that his former club do not score nearly enough goals, having found the back of the net just eight times in their nine Premier League outings so far this season.
‘The lack of goals is a huge problem for Man United,’ said the Irishman. ‘Every time I read the league table, after nine or 10 games, minus three goals for Man United, it’s hard to read.’
Manchester United finished last season with a negative goal difference, scoring 57 goals but conceding 58 over the 38 Premier League campaign.
The Red Devils have already been linked with Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres in order to solve their goal-scoring problem, with the Swedish striker in brilliant form since joining from Coventry.
The 26-year-old scored 43 goals in all competitions last season and has already netted 16 times in 15 games this campaign.
However, when asked about a possible move to Old Trafford, he assured Sporting fans that he is happy where he is.
‘Going with Amorim to Manchester United? I don’t know,’ he said. ‘I’m here. As you can see, I enjoy it at Sporting.
‘It’s nothing I really think about. I’m sad about him [Amorim] leaving. We wish him all the best.’
