Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, on Sunday, swore in the newly elected chairmen for the state’s 44 local government areas, following the recent local elections held on Saturday. Among those sworn in was Sa’adatu Salisu, the only female candidate, representing Tudun Wada Local Government Area.
During the ceremony at the Kano State Government House, Governor Yusuf highlighted the importance of the elections, linking them to the recent Supreme Court ruling that affirmed the financial autonomy of all local governments in Nigeria. He urged the newly elected officials to commence their responsibilities promptly, focusing on effective governance and accountability.
“As you may all know, in July of this year, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy of all 774 local government councils in the country. In line with this, our administration quickly activated the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) to conduct the local government elections,” the Governor stated.

Emphasizing the state government’s commitment to fair representation, he noted that local government councils from opposition parties had been retained without affecting their entitlements. Governor Yusuf called on the new chairmen to lead with integrity and uphold their duties, reminding them of their ultimate accountability.
The oath of office was administered by the Kano State Attorney General, Bar. Haruna Isa Dederi, at the African House chamber of the government house. In a related event, KANSIEC Chairman Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi presented certificates of return, officially recognizing the new officials as legitimate leaders of their respective local governments.
The local elections on Saturday saw participation from six political parties: AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP.
