A Non-Governmental Organisation, Maternal Reproductive Health Collective, has launched a large-scale campaign to promote the safety of pregnant women across various communities in Lagos State.
The campaign was announced by the organisation’s founder, Prof. Bosede Afolabi, a Professor of Gynecology at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, during a recent event.
According to a statement made available to PUNCH Online on Wednesday, Afolabi explained that the initiative, named “Iyaloju” (Mother is the Greatest), is aimed at educating pregnant women on essential practices for safe delivery.
She said that the campaign became necessary given the number of deaths through childbirth, stressing that many of the women do not know what was expected of them to have safe delivery.
“We look after pregnant women. We have research, advocacy and programmes. On the programme, we do respectful maternity care where we train community health workers, and care for the women.
“We raise funds to carry out the programme. October is our yearly event month, and some celebrities joined us for our event.
“They help us to pass the message and raise funds for the NGO,” she said.
The professor said that the organisation was situated in the communities to ensure optimal reproductive and maternal health of women in such areas.
Afolabi said the organisation has offices in Edo, Abuja, Lagos, Gombe and Nasarrawa States.
She said that many pregnant women were reached during the events with gifts and information that would be helpful to them.
