The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Wednesday that 67.8 percent of households in Nigeria use fuelwood as a source of energy for domestic and other purposes.
The NBS stated this in its Nigeria Residential Energy Demand- -Side Survey (NREDSS) 2024 unveiled in Abuja.
The report covered selected states across the six geopolitical zones of the country.
The states are – Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Ekiti, Oyo, Enugu, Kwara, Plateau, Kano, and Sokoto.
The agency revealed that 41 percent of households said they purchased the fuelwood while 39 percent cut or collected it.
The report read: “While 18.9 percent of households used other means such as barter, gift and borrowing, etc.
“More than half of the fuelwood cut/collected by households, 55.3 percent were branches, stems, and trees.”
“Also, one in every five households which accounted for 22 percent used charcoal during the period of the survey.
“Among households using charcoal, 21.6 percent purchased the product, and only 0.3 and 0.6 percent acquired it through their production, and other means respectively.
“Another 19.4 percent of households reported they used Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
“This means that about one in every five households use LPG.
“The average monthly expenditure on LPG stood at N10,239.7 across the surveyed states.”
