The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, NUP, Ogun State chapter has commended Governor, Dapo Abiodun for the approval of N77,000 minimum wage to Ogun State workers, the highest so far announced in the country.
The pensioners stressed that the gesture is a true testimony of the sincerity of purpose and consideration towards the workforce of the state.
This was contained in a statement signed by its Chairman, Waheed Oloyede and Secretary, Bola Lawal on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the gesture will propel the workers to be more productive to further enhance the economic and social status of the state.
They, however, decry that the paltry sum received by most pensioners at the moment is grossly inadequate to purchase drugs for various health challenges and meet the demands of the present-day economic challenges.
The union therefore called on the state governor to approve its request for the long-awaited consequential increase in pensions in line with the 2019 federal government circular on consequential adjustment of pensions.
“In addition to the above, your Excellency, we would be eternally and exceedingly grateful if the new wage increase can be extended to the benefit of us, the Ogun pensioners in accordance with section 210(3) of the constitution of the 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) or approval be made for increase in pensions whenever new wage increase occurs”, the statement reads.
