Amb. Chijioke Ihunwo, the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpo Local Government Area of Rivers State, has alleged that Nyesom Wike, Minister of the FCT, is threatening democracy in Nigeria.
Ihunwo made the allegation on Tuesday while speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show programme.
The statement comes amidst ongoing political crisis in Rivers State following the last Saturday’s local government election.
DAILY POST reported that a section of the Eleme local government secretariat was set on fire shortly after the arrival of newly-elected chairman Brian Gokpa.
Speaking about the crisis on Tuesday, Ihunwo said: “We want to tell Nigerians that nobody can destroy our Local Government. The local government has always been there even before the Minister of the FCT came in to become a chairman.
“So, sponsoring people to start shooting here and there across the local governments is laughable. And Wike is threatening democracy in Nigeria under President Bola Tinubu.
“I want to tell Nigerians that everyone in Rivers State is fine. We assure our people to go about their duty. Two people can’t be mad at the same time. What’s happening in Rivers is more or less laughable.
“We know that what goes around, comes around. Wike did the same to Rotimi Amaechi. Today, Rivers people did the same to him because he has refused to leave Rivers State alone. He wants Rivers State to be his private industry and want put us in his pocket, and we said no.”
