Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has made a passionate plea to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, to relinquish control and allow peace to reign in the oil-rich state.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today program on Monday night, Fubara emphasized that he had done everything in his power to ensure peace, including kneeling to beg for resolution.
“I have all the guts to do these things,” Fubara declared, referencing the recent local government election that faced resistance from Wike’s supporters in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While urging Wike to let go of his grip on the state, Fubara said: “It has gotten to a point where he needs to let go. We need peace in this state… You don’t necessarily need to win all the fights; at times, you just let go for the sake of the good people of Rivers State.”

He emphasized the importance of securing the state, acknowledging that his own tenure would eventually come to an end.
The governor also appealed to Wike to consider the greater good, reminding him that his time in office had passed. “He once ruled this state and the state was an envy of every other state. Another person is there now, what we need now is the support,” Fubara said.
Fubara’s call for peace comes amidst escalating tensions in Rivers State. The recent local government election has sparked violence, with hoodlums targeting local government secretariats. President Bola Tinubu has intervened, directing the police inspector-general to restore order and secure the state.
Former Deputy National Chairman of the PDP, Olabode George, has also weighed in, urging Wike to allow Fubara to govern effectively. George cautioned that continued instability could have far-reaching consequences, drawing parallels with the crisis in the defunct Western Region between 1962 and 1966.
