Court summons Ex-Kogi Gov Bello to appear over alleged N110.4bn fraud charges

Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been summoned to appear before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama on October 24, to face a 16-count charge of criminal breach of trust amounting to N110.4 billion.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed the charges against Bello and two others, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu.

Justice Maryanne Anenih issued the public summons on Thursday, after the EFCC complained of being unable to serve Bello with the charges filed on September 24. The commission alleged that Bello’s absence stalled his arraignment, initially scheduled for Thursday.

As part of the summons, Justice Anenih ordered the EFCC to publish the summons in a widely circulating newspaper and paste copies at Bello’s last known address and in conspicuous places within the court premises.

“The EFCC has been unable to serve the former governor with the charge, and we hereby order the commission to take necessary steps to ensure he is aware of the pending charges against him,” Justice Anenih stated.

The 16-count charge against Bello and his co-defendants includes allegations of misappropriation of public funds during his tenure as governor. The EFCC has been investigating Bello’s administration, and this latest development marks a significant step in the commission’s efforts to hold public officials accountable.

Bello’s absence from the arraignment has raised concerns about his willingness to face the charges.
