There were emotional scenes at Wembley on Tuesday night as England players, staff and fans all paid tribute to the departed quartet of Sven-Goran Eriksson, Kevin Campbell, Craig Shakespeare and Tommy Banks.
A tribute to Eriksson led the way on the big screen in north London as the stadium joined together for a minute’s applause.
The England players wore black armbands for the Nations League game against Finland in another sign of respect after the terribly sad news of the four deaths.
Eriksson passed away last month after revealing in January that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
In the Amazon documentary ‘Sven’ he said: ‘I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when it is finished – when we die. But life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is.
‘Hopefully at the end, people will say: “Yeah, he was a good man.” But everyone will not say that. I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do.
‘Don’t be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything – coaches, players, the crowds. It has been fantastic. Take care of yourself and your life and live it. Bye.’
Former Arsenal and Everton striker Campbell, who won caps for England Under-21s and England B passed away on 15 June after a sustained illness.
Shakespeare, who coached England under Sam Allardyce, died on 1 August after being diagnosed with cancer in 2023.
Tommy Banks played for England six times in 1958, with the Bolton legend living to 94 years old before his death in June this year.

Eriksson’s funeral will take place in his native Sweden on Friday 13 September at 10am local time in Fryksande Church in Torsby.
