There is tension in Ovwor community of Ughelli North local government area, Delta State following a dispute over the timing of an annual feast. The incident which has drawn widespread attention, raising concerns about the handling of traditional disputes within the community.
Trouble started when the newly appointed chief priest allegedly requested that the feast be held in August, while a prominent chief insisted that it be postponed until December.
The situation has sparked outrage particularly among women who took to the streets in protest against the action. The protesters demanded justice and condemning the use of force against the youths. Reports said some youths were shot by security operatives deployed by those who opposed the August date. Arrests have been made over the incident.
