Interior Minister orders investigation of alleged poor feeding at Afokang Custodian Centre

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has expressed his reservation over a disturbing video report on Facebook alleging that inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar are being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans as breakfast.

According to a statement on Sunday by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, the minister considered the incident a serious breach of the standards of care and dignity to which inmates are entitled.

He subsequently directed a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter with a strong warning that those responsible would be held accountable, even as he warned that any lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and welfare of inmates would not be tolerated.

According to him, the Nigeria Correctional Service must ensure inmates are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.

” The findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken,” Tuunji-Ojo said in the statement.
