Eating cats and dogs has long been considered inhumane in the US.

Former US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr, who suspended his bid for the White House as an independent on Friday, was criticized in July after a photo emerged suggesting that he ate barbecued dog. Kennedy pushed back and said the animal carcass he held was a goat.

Consuming certain animals has also been frowned upon internationally.

Late last year, the Gia Bảo restaurant in the Thịnh Đán ward of Thái Nguyên in Vietnam that served ‘specialty cat meat’ and feline soup was shuttered. The slaughterhouse drowned 300 cats monthly and served them to people of the Southeast Asian country where eating felines is relatively common.

The owner told Metro.co.uk that he did not want to kill cats, but did so to make a living.

‘Before selling cat meat at this restaurant I served other normal food and drinks,’ said Pham Quoc Doanh.

‘However, the income was not enough to cover the living cost of my family. It was then I tried selling cat meat since there was no other available restaurant serving this in the area.’

In 2018, a Cambodian woman was arrested after filming herself skinning, cooking and eating endangered animals to make money off of YouTube views. The animals she ate included an endangered fishing cat.
