A footballer in Peru was caught short at the worst possible time and got himself sent off after urinating beside the pitch during a brief break in play.
The unfortunate moment occurred in the second half of Atletico Awajun’s Copa Peru clash with Cantorcillo FC at the weekend and Sebastian Munoz was the guilty party.
It came after Atletico Awajun were awarded a corner in the 72nd minute of the game, with the two teams locked in a stalemate at 0-0.
Munoz – Atletico Awajun’s set-piece taker – clearly felt he was within his rights to take a leak while Cantorcillo goalkeeper Lucho Ruiz received treatment inside the penalty area.
But the referee had other ideas after being alerted to Munoz’s behaviour by an opposition player and stormed over to the corner flag to give the Atletico Awajun star his marching orders.
A visibly stunned Munoz threw his arm out in disbelief and contested the decision before eventually accepting his fate. The incident has gone viral across social media and Munoz’s antics have been greeted with a mixture of both ridicule and sympathy.
That support will come as little consolation to Atletico Awajun, though, who must find a solution while the player serves a suspension in the Peruvian third division.
A similar incident played out in the National League back in October 2017, when Salford goalkeeper Max Crocombe was sent off after relieving himself during his side’s trip to Bradford Park Avenue.
‘Red Card! Crocombe sees red for something off the ball. No one has a clue what has happened. 1-2,’ Salford’s official X account tweeted at the time.
Just a minute later, Bradford Park Avenue confirmed that Crocombe had indeed been given his marching orders for taking a leak in the middle of the game.
‘We can confirm that Crocombe has been sent off for urinating during the game. We are not joking,’ Bradford’s post read.
Crocombe said he found himself in an ‘uncomfortable position’ and apologised for his behaviour, stressing it was never his intention to offend fans inside the stadium.
‘My intention was never to offend anyone and I’d like to apologise to both clubs and sets of supporters,’ Crocombe said.
It subsequently emerged that a spectator inside the ground had logged a formal complaint and the incident was reported to the police.
Munoz will be hoping his embarrassing misdemeanour does not become a police matter.
