Enjoy the UK weather this weekend because wind and rain are on their way

Most people across the UK will be enjoying a fine weekend – but this will all change as we enter the new week.

We’ve got the jet stream to thank for our current pleasant weather as it has split into two branches, one near northern Scotland and one near southern England.

Their placement means most rain over the weekend has fallen either across the far north of Scotland or in France, with a weak ridge of high pressure between the two giving the majority of the UK warm and dry conditions.

Patchy cloud and a few showers are predicted across the weekend, but temperatures should be near average for the time of year, with highs of 24°C in central England and lows of 14°C in northern Scotland.

The most up-to-date forecast for today says: ‘Another pleasant day for most with a good number of warm sunny spells.

‘Cloudier and breezier in the north with isolated showers, locally heavy for a time.’

So you’d better make the most of the warm and dry weather today, because things will start to go downhill from Monday.

David Oliver, Deputy Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: ‘Monday sees changes in the jet stream, these bringing an Atlantic frontal system toward the UK.

‘This will bring some cloudy, wet and windy conditions to many areas during the course of Monday and Tuesday, with strong winds possible in the north.’

Looking further into next week, the fallout of Hurricane Ernesto – currently heading towards Bermuda – is likely to affect the UK’s weather patterns as it moves into the North Atlantic.

Dan says it’s not yet possible to predict how Ernesto will affect us, but added: ‘The most likely scenario is for a period of unsettled weather from Wednesday, especially in the north and west with heavy rain and strong winds possible, whilst it may be warmer and less wet towards the south east.

‘As always, keep an eye on the most up-to-date forecast for the latest.’
