Spice Girls’ ‘feud’ blocks desperately wanted reunion – maybe friendship does end

Friendship apparently does end, as the Spice Girls have once again dashed hopes of a reunion.

Geri Halliwell – aka Ginger – is reportedly not too happy with the behaviour of Mel Brown (Scary Spice), so much so that she’s scrapped the rumoured reunion plans.

This attempt to get the band back together even had Victoria Beckham tentatively attached for the first time since the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.

Despite numerous reunions from every nostalgia band possible, from Girls Aloud to S Club, the Spice Girls remain elusive.

The quintet, which also features Emma Bunton and Melanie Chisholm, first arrived on the music scene in 1994.

Their string of hits, such as Wannabe, Spice Up Your Life, 2become1, and Too Much, catapulpted them to stratospheric fame and made them the best-selling girl group of all time.

In 1997, their icon status was solidified with the film Spice World which was a commercial success and spawned a huge tour across Europe and the US.

With five Brit awards to their name, the Spice Girls split in 2000 and have only reunited twice since (2007 and 2012) – but there’s been a few attempts.

2024: the most recent revival

Rumours have been flying that we were about to get a reunion of all five Spice Girls, finally, after 24 years.

This came after the women reunited at Victoria’s big 50th birthday bash in April, singing together in footage that quickly went viral after it was shared by partygoers.

Fans couldn’t believe their eyes and began to hope that this cheery display could be a reunion in the making.

Even David Beckham’s devastating denial that the Spice Girls will perform together as a group again couldn’t stop the rumour mill churning.

However, a rumoured ongoing spat between Scary and Ginger appears to have firmly put a stop to this.

Mel claimed Geri was lying about her age along with other ‘jibes’, and – according to the Daily Mail – has burnt that bridge, particularly given the turbulent year with Geri’s husband, Christian Horner.

Sorry fans, we’ll have to pray for a 40th-anniversary reunion instead.

2017: A very hopeful announcement

In 2017, fans got more than they bargained for as the GEM reunion looked incredibly promising – even if Posh and Sporty were not joining in.

Emma, Mel B, and Geri released a Wannabe celebration for the 20-year anniversary, with their bandmates’ blessing.

A new song, titled Song For Her, was even leaked online with a tour looking more and more likely, but plans fell through when Geri announced her pregnancy.

The next year the group was back again, and this time Mel C had signed on for the tour, with a hefty £12 million paycheque reported.

Tickets went on sale in November 2018 for 13 dates around the UK, generating an estimated £60million with a three-night sellout run in Wembley, London.

Fans speculated Victoria may appear but when they finally went out on tour in 2019, Posh was nowhere to be seen and is it really a reunion without Posh?

There was no new music released during this time, despite the leaked song from the trio.

That iconic Olympics reunion

Oh 2012, there was so much potential, so much promise, but yet no true reunion in sight.

Viva Forever! the Spice Girls musical saw the quintet join forces for press around the blossoming new stage show.

Sadly, it wasn’t quite Mamma Mia and despite the promotion from the stars ended up closing after five months to a loss of £5million.

the musical did spark speculation that they could also be gearing up to reunite for posisble new music or a tour, which ramped up when the Olympics came into the picture.

August 2012 saw the only time since 2000 that all five Spice Girls have performed together on stage.

Geri, Mel B, Mel C, Emma, and Victoria whizzed about singing a mash up of Wannabe and Spice Up Your Life.

It was the most posted about moment of the entire Olympics, with 116,000 tweets per minute as fans lost their minds at the first reunion since 2007’s concert tour.

However, it was not meant to be as the gig was a one off. In the words of the Spice Girls, ‘Viva Forever’.
