A Russian chess star who allegedly tried to poison her younger female rival with mercury has an obsession with serial killers, it has been revealed.
Amina Abakarova, 40, was caught on CCTV trying to poison Umayganat Osmanova, 30, by smearing her chess board with the mercury on August 2 in Makhachkala, Russia.
It has now emerged Abakarova has an obsession with books on serial killers, which she often posted about on social media.
Stories about Charles Manson, the Zodiac killer, Jack the Ripper, Billy Milligan, the Collector, and other real and fictional serial killers are just some of her favourites.
Before the chess game started, Abakarova had been behaving suspiciously 20 minutes beforehand.
She asked if the cameras were set up to record the games being played were working yet and when she was told they weren’t she carried out her plan.
In actual fact they had been switched on and this caught Abakarova red-handed in the act.
Eyewitnesses confirmed Osmanova was taken ill and hospitalised after sitting at a table where the substance was poured.

After she confessed to the act, she was eliminated from the game and suspended from the Chess Federation in Dagestan, Russia.
An investigation was started under the charge of ‘inflicting bodily harm’.
Abakarova told police she wanted to take revenge on Osmanova for spreading rumours about her and her family.
She has also been known to discuss her interpretation of good and evil on social media and her views on female friendship.
She discussed the nature of rivalry: ‘I am not inclined to support the main character, who wanted with all her might to outshine her friend, since this grows the figure of this person in her mind and all her strength and emotions are controlled by this figure.’

Sazhid Sazhidov, the republic’s minister of physical culture and sports, said in relation to the poisoning: ‘And we all understand that this is far from sporting behaviour, which is why she has been excluded from the republic’s Chess Federation.’
Abakarova has been detained and faces a prison sentence of up to three years if convicted.
