For those of you left struggling yesterday during the UK’s hottest day of the year you’ll be pleased to know it will be slightly cooler today.

But only just as London and the southeast will still reach highs of 28°C today, 6°C cooler than yesterday.

While it will still feel pretty hot and humid today, the good news is that temperatures will begin to cool down more as the week goes on.

However a yellow heat-health alert issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) for the Midlands and southern England is in place until this morning.

A Met Office spokesperson said: ‘Mainly fine with sunshine, although less hot than Monday.

‘An outside chance of thundery showers grazing the far east initially.

‘Eventually cloudier with some rain in the far west later. Maximum temperature 28°C.’

For the rest of the week, the spokesperson added: ‘Becoming more changeable and less hot through this period, as weakening bands of rain spread erratically southeast.

‘Perhaps most widely fine on Friday. Markedly fresher by day and night.’

The recent hot spell was partly due to Tropical Storm Debby, which brought flooding to the eastern United States – the remnants of which were in the North Atlantic and moved across the country.

Debby pushed very warm air to higher latitudes. This has changed the position of the jet stream and has brought across the hot air.

But it wasn’t hot for everybody as a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was in place for parts of the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There were some very lively thunderstorms across northern and western parts of the UK.

Around 15,000 lightning strikes were observed on Sunday evening.

The earlier warning for thunderstorms is no longer in force, as the storms eased up yesterday, but there could be the odd isolated thunderstorm today.
