A volunteer for the Olympic Games has been arrested for the alleged killing of his girlfriend after the closing ceremony in Paris.

A 21-year-old woman who is thought to be Polish was found in the flat the couple shared in the 18th arrondissement of the French capital.

She was reported as missing just after 7pm on Monday, just a day after the 33rd Games came to an end.

The couple, who have not been named, both spent weeks helping visitors to the sporting event, which took over most of Paris.

Police broke into their accommodation in the early hours of today and found her body, which had a blood clot on the left cheek, and traces of blood around the neck.

Her boyfriend was in the same room, and described by the officers as being ‘in a semi-comatose state’ after taking drugs and alcohol.

A spokesperson for prosecutors said: ‘An investigation into voluntary homicide has been entrusted to the second district of the Paris judicial police after the discovery of the lifeless body of a young woman, aged 21, in an apartment in the 18th arrondissement.’

He said her boyfriend has been wanted since Monday after the victim was reported as missing.

Enquiries established she was last seen at 1am on Sunday night, after taking part in the Olympics closing ceremony.

Her phone was geolocated to a suburb north of Paris and then – at around 11pm – her mother in Poland said they had received a text message from a friend saying the partner had done ‘something stupid’.

Questioning of the suspect has been postponed because of his condition, said the investigating source.
