‘What did I just watch?’ was the general consensus – in a seriously good way (Picture: X)

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games has officially wrapped up, following a closing ceremony that saw the event get a Hollywood ending.

Unlike the opening ceremony, which took place outside the stadium and on the River Seine, the Games ended in the Stade de France – with the likes of Tom Cruise, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billie Eilish, Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre taking part in the spectacle.

And, as usual, social media users were quick to share their reactions online. From big moments like Tom Cruise’s hair-raising stunts to awkward fumbles including a man eating noodles on stage and a Team GB flag bearer almost tripping over, there was plenty to talk about.

One moment that caught user’s attention was Leon Marchand’s farewell.

The French Olympian was a standout star at the Games, winning four gold medals and one bronze.

So it was fitting that he brought the Paris Games to a close – but social media users saw the funny side as he carried a small Olympic torch towards the Louvre.

Notably, two people were spotted trying to hide behind a bush after accidentally appearing in shot.

And then there was the moment when a golden figure was lowered into the stadium, which felt familiar to some viewers…

Oh, and this awkward dance moment:

Others spared a thought for Norwegian swimmer Henrik Christiansen – aka ‘the muffin man’ – who’s TikTok reviews of the chocolate muffins in the Olympic village went viral.

And, staying on the food theme, there was the aforementioned noodle moment…

But mostly, people were in equal measures delighted and humoured by Tom Cruise’s appearance, who abseiled in to collect the Olympic flag…

The best memes from the Olympic opening ceremony

There was an upside Olympic flag. That Assasin’s Creed torchbearer. Lady Gaga singing entirely in French. A big Smurf-looking guy riding a plate of food who’s apparently the ‘Greek God of Dionysus’.

The Paris Olympics opening ceremony was ideal meme material, and social media users didn’t hold back.

Even the athletes themselves, trundling down the Seine in their boats, weren’t safe from the meme-making.

But soon enough, there was just one person viewers wanted to see.

Céline Dion, who has been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, wrapped up the ceremony by performing from under the Olympic rings glued to the front of the Eiffel Tower.

Well, what else do you expect from an Olympic Games held in France?
