Two men in their 20s killed after light aircraft crash in North Yorkshire

Two men died in after their plane crashed into a North Yorkshire field this morning.

A pilot and one passenger were on board the two-seater light aircraft when it came down in rural Thorganby, Selby, around 9.50am on Sunday.

Both men are believed to be in their 20s, according to North Yorkshire Police.

Their families have been informed, but a formal identification process is yet to take place.

Multiple ambulances, fire engines and police vehicles were seen along the two-lane country lanes near the crash site.

The aircraft appears to have come down just outside Thorganby, a village of stone cottages with less than 400 residents a 20-minute drive southeast of York.

An air ambulance landed nearby while officers sealed off public footpaths with police tape.

In a statement, the force said: ‘We were called to an incident involving a light aircraft at a rural location in Thorganby, Selby at around 9.50am today.

‘A two-seater light aeroplane with two occupants had crashed in a field.

‘Sadly, two men in their 20s believed to be the pilot and passenger have been pronounced dead.

‘Their next of kin have been told and formal identification processes are currently under way. No further injuries have been reported.

‘We are currently working with the Air Accident Investigation Branch to launch a full investigation into the circumstances.

‘Some road closures remain in place while emergency services continue to deal with the incident.’
