A British student drowned in front of his girlfriend after their boat capsized at Italy’s Lake Como.
The 22-year-old student and his 19-year-old partner were enjoying a romantic getaway in the Italian town of Menaggio and decided to rent a small boat for a leisurely tour of the lake.
With Italy currently in the grip of a heatwave, the pair decided to cool off by taking a dip in the lake, but things soon turned ugly after strong winds blew their boat away and left them stranded in the water.
The pair attempted to navigate the choppy waters but were unable to reach either their boat or the coastline, and as fatigue began to set in the woman soon lost sight of her boyfriend beneath the waves.
The struggling girl was eventually saved after a passing boat noticed her struggling against the waves and brought her back to the shore.
Although she was tired and in shock, she was physically unharmed and urgently informed her rescuers about her missing partner.
A massive search operation was launched as.firefighters, rescue teams, and helicopters scrambled to find the missing man, but his lifeless body was later recovered after it was spotted by a Guardia di Finanza aircraft near Griante and on Wednesday evening.
The local Carabinieri in Menaggio have launched an investigation to piece together the details of this tragic accident.
