The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union Journalists, NUJ, has tasked the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC to deal ruthlessly with people using the union’s stickers on their vehicles even though they are not members of the union.
The union described it as fraudulent, saying that FRSC should not treat such a system of impersonation with a mere wave of hand.
The chairman of the Council, Ibrahim Musa Maizare said the situation has become so rampant, worrisome and unbearable.
Maizare disclosed this when the State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Umar Masa’udu, paid a courtesy visit to the State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ in Gusau, Zamfara State capital.
The NUJ State Council chairman noted that because of such impersonation, the National Secretariat of the NUJ ordered that every authentic member of the union be issued an identification card.
“Anybody caught with an NUJ sticker should be punished unless the person proves himself as a member of the Nigeria Union Journalists or be arrested”, Maizare said.
“Before the arrival of the present Sector Commander in the State, we have been making efforts to end this impersonation but we did not get any positive results”
Responding, the State FRSC Sector Commander said he would do everything within his power to ensure that justice is not miscarried.
Masa’udu commended members of the NUJ for the support being given to the FRSC since its inception, adding journalists are the watchdogs of society.
He appealed to members of the Union to keep on with their support to the FRSC through writeups and sensitizations for the FRSC to achieve its desired goals in the state.
“I was deployed to the state to do my best and I assure you that there will be no sacred cow or untouchable in the discharge of my constitutional responsibility”
