Suppose there are worse places to wake up… (Photo: Tik Tok)
A clearly worse for wear England fan claims to have woken up in an abandoned stadium hours after the Three Lions beat Serbia at Euro 2024.
England took a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia in their opening game of the Euros on Sunday night, which was played at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
While a nervy match, fans in the stadium and at home were nonetheless delighted with the three points, but one supporter’s night took a rather bizarre turn.
In a video that’s gone viral on social media, a man appears to have fallen asleep at the game, waking up at 4am – about five hours after full-time – to find himself all alone.
Via the account @awaydaylads5, in the clip the bleary-eyed man films himself before turning the camera round to show the empty 62,000 seater stadium.
He appears to say: ‘F***ing hell. I’ve just woken up.
‘It’s four o’clock in the morning. I’m shivering in Schalke’s ground.’
At around that time, the temperature in Gelsenkirchen would have dropped to around 14C degrees.
Naturally, there has been debate over the legitimacy of the video given that stewards didn’t discover the man despite the huge security presence at the Euros.
Moreover, it is not known how and if he managed to leave the stadium after waking up or why the floodlights would still be on at 4am.
As expected, there has been some fan trouble at the Euros so far, with UEFA currently investigating claims that England’s players were targeted with alleged ‘monkey noises’ during the Serbia clash.
