A squatter who has lived in a dead man’s home for six years has let the man’s family inside to reclaim their belongings.

Donna Kent inherited the home after her father died in 2012 – but she’s only recently been able to go inside due to a squatter living there.

The squatter, Kyle, said he meant no harm by living in the New York home and he’d been long awaiting a visit from the family.

Kyle, who didn’t give his surname, lived in the house for six years without paying rent – but he kept all of the family’s old possessions and didn’t throw anything away.

The house was in a state of disrepair, and Donna was shocked to find piles of old family pictures, books, and even a vessel of ashes once being let inside, NewsNation reported.

At first she was concerned they could be the remains of her father or other relatives – but she soon realised the vessels more likely contained the ashes of family pets.

‘Makes me feel a little better that it’s pets and not people up here,’ Donna said.

‘I’ve always felt like there was something in there to give me some information, a glimpse into my dad’s life.

‘It’s nice I was able to get into the house and see it for myself.’

It’s not clear exactly why it took 12 years for the Kent family to visit the house, nor how Kyle was able to move in six years after the death of Donna’s father.

Kyle said that despite ‘technically’ squatting, he felt a sense of duty to safeguard the Kent family’s belongings.

He said: ‘I figured eventually somebody would show up, but nobody showed up.

‘I didn’t break in, and I didn’t come in illegally. It’s just, they stopped coming and collecting rent.

‘I understood the situation clearly that somebody would come back.

‘And how would it make them feel if I told them I threw away their parents’ property?’
