Teddy Sheringham is surprised Manchester United have decided to keep Erik ten Hag on as manager for the next campaign, saying the last Premier League season was ‘poor’ under the Dutchman.
The Red Devils finished eighth last season, their worst season in the Premier League, and also flopped in the Champions League as they finished bottom of their group.
The season did end on a high note as United stunned local rivals Manchester City at Wembley to win the FA Cup, but there was doubt over Ten Hag’s future nevertheless.
The Old Trafford hierarchy were considering other options, including Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi, but have decided to stick with Ten Hag for the time being.
Sheringham, who was part of the legendary treble-winning squad in 1999, is surprised by the choice, and suggested the decision-makers flipped a coin to come to their decision.
‘I’m quite surprised with the decision to keep Erik ten Hag to be honest,’ Sheringham TG Casino. ‘It could have gone either way, but Ten Hag had a really poor season in the Premier League – losing 14 games – and didn’t have the consistency that Manchester United really look for and expect.
‘At the end of the day though, he’s won the FA Cup in brilliant fashion by beating Manchester City in the final – it couldn’t have been any harder on paper. It could have gone either way – they could have easily said that their Premier League form wasn’t good enough.

‘I reckon they were flipping a coin of whether to let him go or not, and they’ve decided to carry on.’
Manchester United are sticking with Ten Hag and are prepared to back him in the transfer market this summer, with a striker on their list of targets.
Sheringham agrees with the club that they need a new man up top, saying that Rasmus Hojlund did ‘alright’ last season and will need some help.
‘I think Rasmus Hojlund has done alright,’ said the former England striker. ‘It’s tough playing centre-forward these days because wingers don’t really get down to the by-line and feed players in the box, and he’s not getting an awful lot of supply in midfield.

‘I think he’s feeding off scraps at Manchester United at the moment, but he’s fought well and looks quite strong. It’s a difficult position to play at the club as such a young lad and I think he’s done okay.
‘Having said that, the club need another striker without a doubt. They’re going to be playing a lot of games next season and encountering a lot of injuries, so they’ll definitely need another striker from somewhere.’
