An expert has warned iPhone users not to download iOS 18 as it seems to be ‘bugging’ out.
The beta version, a pre-release available for some users before the software is commercially rolled out, has been available since Apple revealed the update at its WWDC event on Monday.
However, users who have downloaded iOS 18 beta could potentially run into a whole host of issues with the performance of their phone, including a shorter battery life and charging issues, missing or undelivered notifications, and certain apps not working.
It is important to keep in mind that the beta version is not really ready for everyday iPhone use, and it is risky to download it if you only have one phone.
The software is not in its final form, and therefore anyone who downloads it will be opening themselves to a host of inconveniences and shut downs as the system bugs out while trying to find its feet.
Tech writer Michael Swengel took to X to remind people that downloading the software on your main device is not recommended.
‘Reminder: it’s probably NOT a good idea to upgrade your main (only) device to a beta version,’ he wrote.
‘This is the very first public beta. There are going to be bugs.
‘If you want to test out the beta, I’d recommend using another device if you have one.’
Apple’s launch of iOS 18 seems enticing as there will be a host of new features that could make lives easier, including ways to customising the home screen, schedule messages, the company’s new AI additions through Apple Intelligence and so much more.
However, the version is designed for early developers who are trained to find bugs in the software.
And bugs there are aplenty.
Developer John Williams Archer revealed on X that when he tested the beta version on his spare iPhone 12 Pro Max, he found the device would automatically reboot when he exited the Lock Screen.
He also found that the new ‘Lock and Hide an app’ feature, which can make apps invisible or only accessible via FaceID, did not work as intended, as he could not open an app after he locked or hid it.
Another tech enthusiast found that when using iOS 18 beta, the app logos would disappear when changing the tone and colour of the home screen.
Although iOS 18 beta is easily available to download for those with an iPhone, it shouldn’t be too long a wait for the fully-fledged product.
Apple has announced the software should be released later this year, which could be as soon as September, when Apple has a habit of dropping new software alongside new devices – with the iPhone 16 next in line.
But if you can’t wait until then and download the software, then you have been warned it may not function as futuristically as you wish.
