Thomas Tuchel suggested the signing of Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rudiger during talks with Manchester United, according to reports.
Tuchel is currently available having left Bayern Munich at the end of the season and was on United’s shortlist of candidates to replace Erik ten Hag.
The former Chelsea manager met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco about the prospect of taking over at United this summer.
However, it’s understood that Tuchel is now out of the running to join United, with The Times reporting that the 50-year-old has opted to take a break from management after leaving the meeting with Ratcliffe ‘with the sense that he was not going to be United’s choice’.
The report adds that during talks with Ratcliffe, Tuchel explained how he would get the best out of Mason Mount after the midfielder’s injury-ravaged debut season at Old Trafford, while he also suggested that he would look to reintegrate Jadon Sancho, who was frozen out of the first team after a dispute with Ten Hag and spent the second half of the season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
It’s also claimed that Tuchel raised the idea of signing Rudiger, who was a key player for him during his time at Chelsea and has just ended the season with Real Madrid winning La Liga and the Champions League.

Meanwhile, United’s list of managerial candidates has shortened after the club cooled their interest in Mauricio Pochettino.
The Argentine is also immediately available having left Chelsea by mutual consent last month.
United had also made an approach for Kieran McKenna before the 38-year-old opted to extend his contract with Ipswich Town, who secured promotion to the Premier League.
United are still conducting their post-season review and have yet to make a final decision over Ten Hag’s future.
United recorded their lowest-ever Premier League finish this season but Ten Hag strengthened his position after his side beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
Gareth Southgate is also on United’s radar but the 53-year-old’s future will not be determined until after England’s Euro 2024 campaign, which begins against Serbia on Sunday.
