A family were not able to eat their Sunday roast dinner after finding a legless lizard in their bag of Sainsbury’s potatoes.
Video footage taken by the family from Flintshire, Wales, shows the slow worm slithering around inside the packaging.
They had no choice but to watch on in ‘absolute horror’ and even feared getting bitten after they ordered a £360 food shop while on holiday in Cornwall.
Sainsbury’s has apologised to the family and said this is a ‘rare experience’.
The family told North Wales Live: ‘We took the bag of potatoes out of the cupboard ready to prepare our roasters.
‘Then to our absolute horror we saw it move.
‘It was obvious initially it was large but only on closer inspection did we realise it was snake like.
‘Given the fear of snakes we have, you can imagine the screams.’
The slow worm could be seen slithering around inside the packaging
A family member initially mistook the slow worm for a thick potato root.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: ‘We have been in touch with [the customer] to apologise for this rare experience and offer a gesture of goodwill.
‘We have processes in place to prevent this from happening and are investigating this case with our supplier.’
What is a slow worm?
According to The Wildlife Trusts, a slow worm is ‘a legless lizard’.
Its identity is given away by its abilities to shed its tail and blink with its eyelids.
Slow worms can be found in heathland, tussocky grassland, woodland edges and rides where they can find invertebrates to eat and a sunny patch in which to sunbathe.
They are often found in mature gardens and allotments, where they like hunting around the compost heap.
This is not the first time somebody has found something gruesome in their food.
A school worker was left horrified after she found a snail in her takeaway from Toby Carvery.
Chloe Walshaw, from Dudley in the West Midlands, ordered two meals from Tipton’s Burnt Tree Island restaurant for her and her boyfriend on Uber Eats.
They were eating their turkey and beef roast dinners on New Year’s Day when she claimed she saw the snail in her peas and spat out her food.
