The moment of the collision during the Beja Air Show
This is the harrowing moment two airplanes crashed into each other during an air show performance in southern Portugal.
At least one pilot has been killed after their plane collided into the ground at the Beja Air Show.
Footage circulating on social media shows two Yakovlev Yak-52 from the Spanish-Portuguese Yakstars team running into each other.
One of the planes plummets to the ground, while the other somehow manages to land.
A crowd watched the tragedy unfold during the aerobatic accident that happened at about 4pm today.
Six planes were involved in the Beja Air Show. A video filmed by a spectator shows their formation.
As one of them ascends, it appears that it clips the wing of one of the other jets.
A fireball erupts the moment the plane smashed to the ground.
People can be heard screaming in horror in the background of the video.
The event was quickly cancelled after the crash as more than 30 emergency vehicles rushed to the air field.
A statement from the air force said: ‘We regrets to announce that at 4.05pm, at the Beja Air Show, two planes were the victim of an accident during an aerial demonstration.’
The name of the pilot who died in the accident has not been released yet.
