As part of efforts to end open defecation, the Plateau State Environmental Protection and Sanitation Agency has called for private-sector collaboration to erect public toilets in public places.
The Director General of PEPSA, Mr Samuel Dapiya, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, on Sunday in Jos.
He noted that it was imperative for the private sector and well-spirited individuals to construct standard toilets in public places, as part of Corporate Social Responsibility.
Dapiya said this would help curb the prevalence of open defecation in the state, while also complementing government efforts.
According to him, the gesture would also promote the use of toilets and good hygiene practices in the state.
The DG further called for the establishment of more public toilets by private business investors in strategic places in the state.
According to him, it is a good business venture that will generate revenue for both the investor and the state government.
He added, “I enjoin public toilet operators to collaborate with the government to curb the menace of open defecation by establishing toilets inaccessible locations and operating according to the required standard.”
The PEPSA DG, said in its efforts towards reducing the high rate of open defecation, the current administration had begun the construction of public toilets at the City Centre, Terminus, and where street traders were relocated.
He commended Governor Caleb Mutfwang-led administration for prioritising the health of its citizens through a sanitised environment.
