A spinoff of global hit action film John Wick starring actor Donnie Yen is cooking. Set in Hong Kong, filming will begin in 2025.
The spinoff to center around Donnie Yen’s blind assassin character Caine in John Wick: Chapter 4, has Umbrella Academy’s Robert Askin writing the screenplay and Lionsgate as the Production Company. Developing the spinoff via a deal with Lionsgate is director, Chad Stahelski. Stahelski will produce through his 87Eleven Entertainment alongside Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
While there’s been no details to the plot yet, Lionsgate said the spinoff will continue Caine’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as he has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
It will be recalled that the retired Caine, introduced as an old friend of John, was recruited by the High Table to assassinate him in the fourth installment of John Wick. Caine took on the contract to protect his daughter, and in the end was freed from his obligations to the High Table.
Excited about the news Yen said, “Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil and Erica push themselves to create action, fights and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive and artistic, but also expressive of character, story and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more. We are excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars onboard to continue this journey” said Chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, Adam Fogel.
