As part of efforts to improve the country’s blood banking system, the Federal Government has initiated efforts to establish a unified national blood database.

The harmonisation is meant to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of blood banking services in Nigeria to ensure a safer and more reliable supply of blood for needy patients.

This was disclosed in a press statement by the National Blood Service Commission on Thursday.

It was indicated in the statement that the move was announced by the Director General of the commission, Professor Saleh Yuguda, during a collaborative meeting with a team from the African Medical Centre for Excellence in Abuja.

The ACME’s team led by Brian Deaver, is seeking to collaborate with the commission to identify areas of beneficial partnership.

Yuguda emphasised the need for research programmes that target blood service and haematology and pledged a robust commitment to the AMCE.

He said, “This development is a significant step forward for Nigeria’s healthcare system and highlights the government’s commitment to improving the quality of care for its citizens.

“The collaboration between the NBSC and the AMCE is expected to yield fruitful results, driving progress in the fields of blood service and haematology,” the statement added.
