Firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene clashed with progressive star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez during a House committee meeting after the Republican remarked on another lawmaker’s ‘fake eyelashes’.

The oversight committee hearing had convened to resolve the issue as to whether US attorney general Merrick Garland was to be held in contempt of Congress.

But it was barely half an hour old by the time Taylor Greene, or MTG, made a partisan point and sought to link Democrats to the prosecution of Donald Trump.

She said: ‘I’d like to know if any Democrats on the committee are employing Judge [Juan] Merchan’s daughter?’

It prompted Democrat Jasmine Crockett to ask: ‘Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland?

‘Do you know what we’re here for? You know we’re here about AG Garland?’

The Georgia Republican then remarked: ‘I don’t think you know what you’re here for… I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.’

Amid the furore, Democrat Jamie Raskin said: ‘That’s beneath even you, Ms Greene.’

Ocasio-Cortez demanded her words be struck from the record.

She blasted her counterpart for her ‘disgusting’ and ‘unacceptable’ comments.

MTG hit back by sarcastically asking Ocastio-Cortez if her feelings had been hurt, prompting the latter to reply: ‘Oh girl, oh baby girl, don’t even play.’

AOC was also on the end of a barb, with Taylor-Greene taunting that she did not have ‘enough intelligence’ to engage her in debate.

Overall, it took nearly an hour to get the meeting back on track.
