Chelsea will land a further £5million from Real Madrid as a result of the deal that saw Eden Hazard move to the Bernabeu in 2019 – even though he no longer plays for the Spanish club.

The former Belgium international was sold to Real in the summer of 2019 for a total package worth around £130m, with £40m of that made up of performance-related add-ons.

Hazard was 28 at the time and entering the final year of his contract, with the transfer hailed as a masterclass in negotiation from Chelsea’s hierarchy.

The deal looked even better when he retired from football at the backend of last year after scoring just four La Liga goals for Real, and incredibly Chelsea are still profiting from the transfer even now.

According to The Telegraph, one of the add-ons was triggered this month when Carlo Ancelotti’s side reached the final of the Champions League.

After knocking out Premier League leaders Manchester City in the quarter-final, Real dispatched Bayern Munich in the semi to reach the final at Wembley at the very start of next month.

They will now take on Borussia Dortmund and, irrespective of the result, will be required to stump up £5m to Chelsea as part of the arrangement that saw Hazard move to the Bernabeu.

While the Belgian may no longer play for Real, he initially signed a five-year contract with the Spanish giants and the terms of his transfer remain valid for the same time period.

Hazard mutually agreed to terminate his contract last summer, a year early, after a string of injuries and loss of form, hanging up his boots for good in October.

The shrewd deal was orchestrated by Chelsea’s former chief executive Marina Granovskaia and, though a relatively small fee, is a welcome boost as the club look to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

The Champions League final could end up being an expensive day for Real Madrid, with los Blancos also having to pay out on a number of other bonuses in other transfers.

Last summer’s deal for Jude Bellingham, for example, included around £27.5m worth of add-ons, with £4.3m owed somewhat ironically to Dortmund if Real manage to beat them at Wembley.

On top of that, if Bellingham makes the Champions League Team of the Season – which seems highly likely after a stellar campaign – then Dortmund will be due another £1.7m on top of that.
