A non-profit organisation, DKT International Nigeria has enlightened residents of the Makoko community in Lagos State on the importance of family planning.

The NGO said family planning has been identified as the most cost-effective means to improve the health of mothers in Nigeria.

In an outreach conducted in the community by the organisation in memory of its founder, Phil Harvey, the organisation said there was a need to close the knowledge gap among women of reproductive age in low-income areas on the use of modern contraceptives, especially Intrauterine devices.

Harvey was an American social entrepreneur who made contraception affordable for hundreds of millions of people in the developing world and gave women the power to take charge of their reproductive health and advance the well-being of their families.

A statement by the organisation noted that DKT Nigeria is still committed to achieving Harvey’s goals of securing the vision in which every child is valued, cared for, and wanted, as well as making sure that contraceptive services and products are available to underserved and difficult-to-reach areas of the country.

The community members benefited from free medical checkups, consultancy, and family planning services.

The Hospital Sales and Clinical Service Team of the NGO, led by Mrs Faustina Ekundare, who spoke on the benefits of family planning, told the Makoko residents that family planning helps people to have the desired number of children, which leads to improved health of the mothers.

The statement partly read, “Clients who were willing to adopt a family planning method were also given free contraceptive services along with appropriate counselling from the knowledgeable DKT team.

“In addition to continuing to inform communities about the advantages of family planning and providing them with our full range of contraceptive services, we hope to carry out more outreach programmes and training initiatives in other underserved regions of the country to ensure that every provider is well-equipped with adequate training and family products.”

Furthermore, DKT Nigeria stated that is a leading provider of family planning services and products in Nigeria.

“DKT Nigeria provides couples with effective, safe, affordable, and quality family planning options through innovative campaigns, outreaches, and collaborations with both governmental and non-governmental organisations”, the statement added.
