PUNCH Healthwise reports that Hundreds of Nigerians have tragically lost their lives in boat mishaps in states like Lagos, Anambra, and Kwara states, among others.

In April, a boat mishap claimed the life of Nollywood actor, Pope Odonwodo, popularly known as Junior Pope and four others in River Niger, Anambra State.

They died while returning from a location where they went to shoot a film, ‘The Other Side of Life’.

According to eyewitnesses, he would have survived the incident if he had worn a life jacket before embarking on the journey.

Most of the boat accidents that took place on the nation’s waterways were mainly blamed on a lack of adherence to safety standards.

Meanwhile, experts in marine transportation have always advised boat operators and management of jetties to ensure that all passengers comply with safety measures to guarantee safe water travel, with emphasis placed more on wearing life jackets.

They also said such tragedies could have been prevented if the state and federal governments placed a premium on safety and ensured that dangerous actions like over-speeding, overloading and non-use of life jackets, among others, were enforced to the latter.
