As Nigeria continues to grapple with the complex issue of reproductive health misinformation, the role of education and advocacy remains paramount, according to experts.
By equipping individuals with accurate information, promoting open dialogue, and advocating for policy change, the experts said Nigeria can move closer to achieving reproductive health equity for all its citizens in the next couple of years.
Nigeria has faced difficulty in recent years dispelling false information about reproductive health.
The capacity of individuals to make informed decisions about their reproductive health is often obstructed by the prevalence of misinformation which can range from misconceptions about contraception to falsehoods about sexual health practices.
However, through collaborative efforts and sustained commitment, experts say the country can build a future where every individual has the knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their reproductive well-being, free from the shackles of misinformation.
One of the experts, Anuoluwapo Sarah Otubusin, who is the Programme Manager at Education as a vaccine (Advocacy) said advocacy and educational initiatives are being seen as an effective means of debunking falsehoods and spreading factual knowledge.
She highlighted the critical role that advocacy and education play in addressing false information about reproductive health in Nigeria.
Otubusin said, “In Nigeria, misunderstandings about reproductive health have been effectively addressed through a number of educational campaigns.
“NGOs, government agencies, and community-based organizations have collaborated at different points in time to put together extensive educational initiatives aimed at rural as well as urban communities.
“These programmes have come up with diverse strategies, including workshops, seminars, peer education, community sensitizations and digital campaigns, to disseminate accurate information about reproductive health.
“By empowering individuals with knowledge on contraception, family planning, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), maternal health and others, these initiatives aim to encourage healthy decision making and dispel misinformation.
“Simultaneously, advocacy efforts have played a crucial role in combating reproductive health misinformation in Nigeria. Civil society organizations and activists have tirelessly campaigned for advanced laws and policies that prioritize reproductive rights and access to accurate information.
“These advocacy efforts have led to several movements as well as discussions both within the government and amongst citizens for reproductive health programs, improved healthcare infrastructure, and the implementation of policies aimed at promoting comprehensive sexuality education in schools.
“Additionally, advocacy campaigns have leveraged social media and online platforms to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and debunk myths surrounding reproductive health, reaching a wide audience across the country and promoting awareness.”
Otubusin noted that the combined efforts of education and advocacy have been instrumental in addressing misinformation surrounding reproductive health, leading to tangible improvements in various aspects of public health.
“Deep-seated cultural taboos surrounding reproductive health, coupled with limited access to healthcare in remote areas, pose significant barriers to progress. Moreover, resistance from conservative factions further complicates efforts to ensure universal access to accurate reproductive health information without stigma or discrimination.”
To effectively address these challenges and ensure equitable access to reproductive health education and services for all Nigerians, Otubusin said it is imperative to strategically employ advocacy and education.
“Civil society organizations dedicated to promoting sexual and reproductive health play a crucial role in this regard, utilizing advocacy efforts to raise awareness, influence policies, and mobilize communities.
“Education forms the cornerstone of effective advocacy, empowering individuals with the knowledge and tools to advocate for their rights and those of others.
“By prioritizing comprehensive sexuality education and accurate information dissemination, these organizations strive to ensure that policies and programs prioritize reproductive health education and access to services, ultimately combating misinformation and fostering positive reproductive health outcomes nationwide.”
