Arsenal suffered an all too familiar Champions League demise at the hands of Bayern Munich after a performance that highlighted the deficiencies that still exist in Mikel Arteta’s young squad.

With the tie delicately poised following last week’s 2-2 draw at the Emirates, Arsenal travelled to Munich with genuine optimism despite Sunday’s shock defeat against Aston Villa.

Hope of pulling off a famous victory would only have risen following an impressive fist-half display at the Allianz Arena, but just as they did against Unai Emery’s men, Arsenal faded after the break and failed to lay a glove on Bayern once they fell behind just past the hour mark.

Arteta attempted to shuffle his pack in response to Joshua Kimmich’s bullet header, but they hardly mustered a shot worth mentioning as Bayern held on to their advantage without breaking sweat, using all of their European nous.

Indeed, Arsenal’s muddled attacking performance was summed up in the last 30 seconds when Bukayo Saka passed up the opportunity to strike a free-kick at goal and instead passed quickly to Ben White who was immediately closed down.

From the ensuing corner, Saka failed to beat the first man with Arsenal’s final touch of a disappointing evening.

The England international has looked jaded in recent weeks and was easily snuffed out by Noussair Mazraoui.

Bild awarded Saka a five in their match ratings (one being the best possible grade and six the worst) but he was not alone in failing to deliver, according to the German publication.

Centre-half William Saliba, right-back Ben White, midfield anchor Jorginho as well as Arteta, himself, were all awarded five star ratings.

Despite, the lacklustre nature of the defeat, Arteta insisted he was proud of his team’s performance and was adamant that a run to the last eight of competition Arsenal hadn’t participated in for seven years was something to be proud of.

He said: ‘We haven’t played in the competition for seven years; we haven’t been in this position for 14 years.

‘There’s a reason for it, and we want to do everything. Fast forward, super quick in one season and after we had the capacity and the quality to be in the semi-final, because the margins have been very small.

‘But those margins sometimes are coming from something else, that maybe we don’t have yet.

‘We have to learn it, when you look historically, all the clubs to get to certain stages, it took them seven, eight, some of them 10 years to do it. Today that is not going to make us feel better, that’s for sure.’
