The Minister of State for Environment, Dr Iziaq Salako, has revealed that the Federal Government is reviewing explosive storage rules following the recent explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, that claimed several lives and caused widespread destruction.
He underscored the urgent need to enhance safety protocols and regulations in the storage and transportation of explosives across the country.
Recall that on January 16, 2024, panic gripped Ibadan residents following an explosion that occurred on Dejo Oyelese Street in the Bodija area of the city.
PUNCH Healthwise reported that there were five fatalities, with 77 individuals sustaining varying degrees of injuries from the explosion.
The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, attributed the devastation to explosive devices stored in an apartment and suggested the involvement of foreigners.
In an exclusive interview with PUNCH Healthwise, the Minister of Environment underscored the federal government’s commitment to review the current practices of storing explosives to ensure compliance with the highest safety standards.
Salako clarified that an agency under the Ministry of Environment is responsible for issuing minimum standards for the storage of explosives used for commercial activities.
The minister noted that there are ongoing efforts to update regulations to align with present realities and they are meant to develop comprehensive guidelines prioritizing safety and minimizing accident risks.
Salako also addressed the illegal storage of explosives within residential areas, emphasizing that such actions pose severe dangers to the public.
He expressed confidence in the ongoing investigations by the Oyo State government and the Ministry of Minerals Development, saying that he is optimistic that those responsible would be brought to justice.
