Former prime minister Liz Truss has revealed the late Queen’s final words to her before the monarch’s death.

Queen Elizabeth II met Truss, the shortest-serving British prime minister in history, at Balmoral on September 6, 2022, just two days before the monarch’s death.

Queen Elizabeth’s meeting with Truss was her final official engagement, shortly after Truss was made leader of the Conservative party following Boris Johnson’s resignation.

The revelation comes as Truss tours the media to promote her new book, Ten Years To Save The West, in which she reveals she thought ‘why me, why now?’ when the Queen’s death was announced just two days into her seven-week term as prime minister.

She said she went into ‘a state of shock’ when told of Elizabeth II’s death in 2022.

Recounting her audience with the Queen, Truss said there ‘simply wasn’t any sense that the end would come as quickly as it did’.

What were the Queen’s last words to Liz Truss?

As Truss left their first and only official meeting as queen and prime minister, the monarch simply said, ‘I’ll see you next week.’

Truss, whose tenure in Downing Street lasted just 49 days after her mini-budget triggered economic turmoil, also revealed the late Queen told her to ‘pace yourself’.

‘Maybe I should have listened,’ the former Tory leader said.
